Upward Brewing Co. opens in Livingston Manor

This fall Conde Nast Traveler called Livingston Manor the “new poster child of bohemian Catskill living.” And almost as if on cue, Upward Brewing officially opened its doors.

Situated on over 100 acres of woods and open meadows, Upward Brewing Co. is this trendy, small town’s newest destination. Pouring crisp, clean and “highly drinkable”  beers, they source fresh natural spring water straight from their preserve they coined as Beer Mountain®.  It all starts with the water! The brewery is the perfect destination for craft beer lovers and nature-a-holics alike, since while visiting for some brews, you can also take hike up said mountain to take in the fresh air and surrounding sweeping views.

The beer selection has something for everyone. A Black Grass Pils-Noir (5.5% abv) is an unexpectedly dark pilsner, exclusively brewed at night apparently, with notes of cocoa and abundant flavor from the Czech Saaz hops. The recently released Breadwinner IPA (5.4% abv) deliver flavors of “dank marmalade and peaches” and a heavy dose of Citra and Columbus hops. For the wheat fans there’s Golden Ratio (5.2% abv), which is a white wheat beer, tasting of bright pineapple and paired with Wakatu and Mosaic hops. Most of the beers hover in that 4-6% abv range, keeping pints drinkable and growlers practical to enjoy.

The taproom has a welcoming, beautifully designed bar atmosphere with a swell of seating options. Locals and tourists alike mingle in the space with impressive light fixtures, a tiled grand fireplace with comfy couches, and a large wrap around bar with high top stools. Big windows throughout let in an enormous amount of light, and give a strong sense of place with views of lush trees, rolling hills and distant mountain tops, ideal for sipping beers and appreciating the scenery as it goes from day to night.

The brewery has a restaurant partner on site, as well, called Upward Kitchen. Formerly the folks behind the Rolling River Guest House in Parksville, the menu is a happy cross between classic bar fare and local farm-to-table cuisine. Sausages with locally-fermented kimchi and locally-grown micro greens, juicy burgers, and vegan pulled “pork” with avocado slaw and pickled red onions, served with house made hot sauce. The hours for the kitchen aren’t always the same as the brewery, so best to call before you go.

The brewery is fully open Monday – Thursday 5-9pm (Kitchen closed Wednesdays), 4-10pm Fridays, 1-10pm Saturday, and 1-8pm Sunday. Keep tabs on their social media channels and follow the Upward Kitchen crew on instagram, too, to see menu updates and food specials. As Livingston Manor continues to heat up, plan a visit to see what all the buzz is about – and get a taste of something truly Catskills at Upward Brewing Co.
